New Vietnamese restaurant in Newtown

This is new Vietnamese restaurant in Newtown

A chef and co-owner of Rice paper Vietnamese cuisine, Anh Lam was the co-owner and head chef of the famous Saigon Bowl Vietnamese Restaurant in Strathfield for over 15 years.

So no doubt, she knows what she is doing very well. Also this restaurant opened this mid September, still got write up from Sydney morning herald.

As I can imagined, food was fresh and even very good portion!

I had young coconuts juice because I was very thirsty when I arrived in restaurant. Young coconuts juice is natural sports drink! Hydrate the body straight away! My boy friend ordered strawberry and lycee smoothie. I have never had this combination. Awsome!

strawberry and lycee smoothie  &  young coconuts juice with coconuts meat

By the way, this restaurant is not vegetarian but when we ordered vegetarian meals, I was asked if it is ok to use egg or fish sauce in advance. Very professional!  It happens quite often that soup stock or sauce contains fish or meat but not informed.

I choose this first

Summer roll

Summer roll – it is vegetarian rice paper roll , it is the name of restaurant, gotta try it!

( winter, spring, fall roll is also available but not vegetarian )

Stuffed with full of fresh veggies- green salads, cabbage, carrot, tofu and my favorite herb! I can tell the roll was made to order, very fresh.

Vegetarian papaya salad

I really like papaya salad but it can be  hard to have vegetarian version. Many restaurants put dried prawn and fish sauce but I am glad I can enjoy vegetarian papaya salad here! Very refreshing, great portion! Freshly julienned papaya with tofu, carrot, cucumber, apple (!) with herbs and crushed peanuts.  So refreshing!

Vegetarian Vietnamese pancake

I love Vietnamese pancake and this is HUGE!!!!!! You can’t tell from photo but it was huge with generous amount of herbs! Three kinds of herbs including my favorite one, with salad and apple.

Pancake is very crispy, yes, it is made from rice flour. Great gluten free choice. Vietnamese is really good for gluten intolerance people. Not only rice noodle and rice paper roll but also pancake.  I have just noticed we ordered all gluten free dishes.

Insides are mixed veggie, mung bean and  bean sprouts. Lots of raw veggies! So healthy and yummy!

Vegetarian fried rice ( not on a menu )

Not oily at all! Love it!  Lots of variety of veggie- carrot, pea, corn, bean, tofu, egg and potato.  It is the first time I had potato in fried rice, well, it is great.

We are two of us, yes, we both are big eater but we were absolutely full! Damn, I ate too much again!

Green gourmet is vegetarian restaurant in Newtown and St. Leonards.

I have been to Green gourmet many times but for some reason, I have never been to dinner time.

I love yum cya on weekend! so many varieties! Also they do buffet lunch on weekday.

Finally we did have dinner!

For entree

wonton soup  $5.5

wonton is home made. Making wonton is such a time consuming thing so I love eating them in restaurant not at home :)

Raw organic burdock salad $8.6

Japanese style shreded burdock roots, snowpea, lettuce and carrot seasoned with sesame seeds and vinegar.

Burdock is root veggies that is very popular in Japan. It is hard to get one in Sydney so I am very happy to have one. Slightly sweet salad. Yummy!

For main,

Crisp skin not chicken shantung sauce $15.8

Crisp fried wheat protein served with pickles vegetable, chili, vinegar and peanuts.  I don’t cook mock meat at home ( mock meat is processed food after all ) but sometime, I can treat myself …they are yummy!

Clay pot tofu pillow with eggplant $15.8

Succulent pillow of tofu sheets cooked slowly with fresh eggplant and pickled vegetable.

Huge portion! Love it :)) Also quite often, eggplant dish is quite oily but not this dish.

Very importantly, brown rice is available here. Even better thing is that rice with beans! Complete protein !!!

Five grain rice

Brown rice, red bean, perl barley and  kidney bean

Steam vegan custard coconuts dumpling

not too sweet, just right!!! and it is vegan!

Vegan breakfast at Newtown

This place only does breakfast on weekends. Rest of time, it is pizza place which I really like. I wrote about this place before.

Last time I had pizza there, I got menu for breakfast. When I saw the coffee description, I just to want to go there! Below is the description. I can see the love of coffee. no wonder this place is ” naked espresso “

Organic Fair trade coffee manually prepared, ground-on demand Naked Double-shots, poured into Swiss porcelain or French glass, served with Organic rapadura sugar and organic whole-bean soymilk at no additional charge

*I put bold on my favourite parts.

I really think that all barista should know that soy milk has much stronger taste than milk so soy coffee need extra coffee to actually taste the coffee. Quite often, soy latte taste like just soy milk. I believe that all soy coffee needs to have 1.5 or double shots! That is why I still order cow milk coffee to avoid frustration ( also just love taste…) even though I know cow milk is not healthy…

Rapadura sugar is un-refined real brown sugar with nutrients. Brown sugar you buy at supermarket is refine sugar ( white sugar ) with morasses added which has no nutritional value and harmful to your body.

Taste? really really nice even though I am not big fan of soy latte!

Scrambled Tofu Feast $13.9

Spiced scrambled tofu with baby spinach, home cooked baked beans, roasted pumpkin, sauteed mushrooms, hashebrowns, with two slices of organic sourdough or gluten free toast

He choose gluten free bread, which was really nice. some gluten free bread can have nasty flavour and texture. It was nice. well, we both love egg too much so scrambled tofu wasn’t so satisfying…

I choose Mix ‘n’ match $12.9

Choose any four of the following Home cooked baked beans, sauteed mushrooms, roasted pumpkin, wilted baby spinach, two hashbrowns, two redwood sausages, grilled tomato, two redwood streaky-style bacons All combinations will be served with two slices of organic sourdough or gluten free toast with vegan margarine or extra virgin oil

I choose sauteed mushroom, whilted baby spinach, sausages and tomato with organic sourdough and vegan margarine. sourdough is from sonoma bread. I choose vegan margarine since I was curious which one they use. It is very hard to find no - trans fat vegan margarine…yes, they use Nuttelex unfortunately.

It does contain trans fat…that is harm to our body. so I will recommend to choose olive oil. Also hashbrown is not home made, is is from Mc Cain ( frozen food company )….so more trans fat! If you are health conscious person, choose something else not hashbrown! Even though, portion is not that big ( I am big eater so this portion is ok for most people! ) but with $12.9 and serve organic sourdough with olive oil, with variety of vegetables isn’t too bad. I guess just choose right food!

Remember„„coffee is great if you love soy latte! ( no cow milk available there! )

Green gourmet- vegetarian yum cha

I went to vegetarian yum cya with my girl friend, Hitomi. She is not vegetarian but she likes here very much so we went there together a few times together when I was eating meat and fish everyday.

It is always great to have yam cya with a group to enjoy many dishes but I had a strong urge to have Green gourmet yam cha so…

It was totally full !!! Thankfully there was one table left!!!

This is mock chicken.

They are tasty and also well made. You can see the skin of chicken!

Doesn’t look it like a chicken skin???

vietnamese roll

Five- Grain rice which is mi of brown rice, read bean, pearl barley, kidney bean and soy bean. Healthy!!!!

radish cake, this is Hitomi’s favourite.

This is my favourite. It is a mock calamari. It really taste like very soft well cooked calamari. Sometime real calamari can be chewy if chef is not great but this one is always perfectly soft!!!

dumpling with sweet sesame filling

We ordered more such as steamed dumplings but I lost my control by all yummy dishes so forgot to take some photo….

Vegetarian Vietnamese restaurant in Newtown

It is very new for me to go to vegetarian restaurants. I hate to go to a normal restaurant to order vegetarian dish which has so little choice or boring dishes that I can cook so easily…so I used to eat whatever I feel like when I eat out but now I am more advanced? wanna be vegetarian, so I start to explore vegetarian restaurants.

I went to Vina vegetarian ( vegan ) restaurant in Newtown

Entree

*Green salad with sesame oil dressing  $6

I liked mushroom froth on top.

*Crispy vegetables and fresh mushrooms $6

They are like tempura. Difference is served with sweet sauce

Main

Spicy Vietnamese style rice noodle soup $12

Very nice! I love lots of herbs. great soup.

Mock pork with ginger, shallots and soy sauce $15

I know mock food is not so good cos it is processed food after all… many ” professional” vegetarian says that it is for beginners. Well, I am a beginner so I enjoyed…..

lots of mock food like beef, fish, chicken, pork available.

you can choose sauce from

sweet sour sauce, mushroom sauce, curry, lemon grass …

This is vietnamese restaurant but you can still find Thai and Indian dishes as well.

I bought vegetarian oyster sauce here! $4.5

Taste? well, this is less saltier than normal oyster sauce but I think it is pretty good.

I need to try my favourite Thai dish with this sauce soon. hope works well…..
