We went to a local Mexican restaurant Azteca’s. My friend Miyoung, been there before and she told me it was nice but she ate meat dish so we were just hoping that vegetarian dishes are also nice…
Start from Dip
Tres en uno $14.2
Your choice of any three dips, we choose
- Guacamole- avocado mixed with tomato, onion and spices
- Jalapeno- A special blend of sour cream and jalapeno chillies
- Frijoles- A delicious blend of beans, chilli and cheese
Frijoles the winner! Jalapeno was quite spicy and too much dairy…so it was our least favourite.

Sope $5.8
I thought it is soup or something but it wasn’t…
It’s a lightly pan-fried cake of corn dough topped with refried beans, ricotta and chilli salsa. It was like a cracker rather than cake, which means, quite crispy!
It is normally comes with mince meat but we asked ” vegetarian ” version for us
I quite enjoy the salsa, called Salsa Fresca, not so spicy! ( behind the Sope )

Main
Azteca- two enchiladas and one soft taco ( choice of chicken/ beef and vegetarian ) $17.9
Quite generous portion! We were going to order another main but when we saw this portion, we didn’t order another main.

This is ” the dish” , highlight of the night
Cactus Salad ! $7.7

You see, the dark greenish thing on the bottom…
They are pickled cactus. It was sour and slightly slimy…. There were lots of them in the salad.
Little close up -cactus with red cabbage …this Vinaigrette red cabbage was everywhere…with sope, salad and main dish.

I don’t think my boy friend ate much cactus. I was the only one eating them! I think he was bit scared this slimy food…
I guess I love sour taste and also quite used to eat ” slimy” food…In Japan, we eat a lots of slimy food :) I even ate slimy aloe ( click here to see my aloe rice ), so who cares!
but when the salad plate was just cactus, I didn’t know what to do.
so….I did ” JAPANESE WAY” of end the dinner.
In Japan, when we eat ” kaiseki”, Japanese full course ( lots of tiny little dishes ! ), we end the long full course with rice, soup and pickles. so I decided to have rice and cactus to finish the dinner. Cactus is like pickles, salty and sour
Even main dish has some rice but it wasn’t enough for me the serious rice lover! so It is perfect for me :)
Final order
Rice and refried beans ( bean for my Mr bean boy friend who loves bean… )

I simply ate cactus and rice…goes well :) I enjoyed this way, simply because I am Japanese, so I won’t recommend this for others…( definitely not for my Irish boy friend )
It’s a Friday night, I see two groups that were having birthday party
Everybody was wearing Mexican hat

live music played and singed by the owner. He is quite good. Not only happy birthday songs, lots of other songs..

Then I found his CD. No wonder, he is quite good!

Azteca was filled with people. Very busy!
I must say that Mexican restaurant “Baja” in Glebe has more vegetarian options and serve really really great fresh food, but I understand why Azteca is quite popular Because of the owner’s live music and great service ( he is quite friendly, too! )
